The Table

The Table was a four-week intensive group project to be entered into an in-school competition; two winning teams would then be entered into the Future Spaces Foundation's 2019 Student Design Competition "Social Places vs Social Media".

Our group, consisting of Anna Reeves, Grace Young, Thomas White, Marilyn Rey, Paul Johnson, and myself, was selected within the school to attend the competition.

This project was the very first thing we did on the mArch and as such I felt the need to get back into the habit of making stuff, even silly stuff, constantly. Over the course of the project I made dozens of tiny model tables - most were about 1-2cm in size - mostly to keep my hands busy, as well as a design diary with a flexible cover and a few other fun little things.

We also each produced a poster advertising our 'Communal Catalyst'.

At some point during the project, the group wanted to produce a video or sound for the project presentation, and it was decided to do a stop-motion using my box of tiny tables (only about half of them featured in the film).

We set the 'stage' and photographed and moved the tables together, and I stitched together the photos, 'painted' in the background, and added the sounds.

I really enjoyed how silly this animation ended up, though editing the background into (and around the tables in) so many 'frames' was an absolute nightmare - I actually originally created this as an animated GIF, cut and timed a freestock 'crowds' sound to fit (in Audacity), and then used a website to apply the sound to the GIF and make it into an MP4. Though I am familiar with Premiere Pro and similar software for video editing, I didn't have access to it at the time, nor did I know how to create this effect in the program.

I have since adjusted the sound levels in PP, however, as the original MP4 was far too quiet - the animation itself has remained untouched, as I kind of like the roughness of it; sometime naive is sweet.
